Flash Access 2.0 announced – comparison to FMS protected streaming

Posted by: Jens Loeffler    Tags:  DRM    Posted date:  September 17, 2009  |  No comment

Adobe announced Flash Access 2.0 at IBC in Amsterdam, formerly known as FMRMS (Flash Media Rights Management Server). While the new name will certainly help to better remember the product, one of the significant improvements will be the ability to play DRM protected content in an upcoming version of the Flash Player – the playback is not limited to Adobe AIR anymore.

To clarify the difference between Flash Media Server content protection and Flash Access DRM, here is a quick summary:

Flash Media Server – “protected streaming”

  • Protocol level content protection with RTMPE – 128 bit encryption
  • SWF verification to control the player SWF
  • Access control through token authentication
  • All features are supported by major CDNs today, and a trusted way to protect premium content
  • Live, Dynamic Streaming and DVR support
Flash Access DRM

  • The physical file will be encrypted and policy protected
  • License server required to allow playback
  • Delivery independent (progressive download or streaming)
  • Ability to revoke, renew, modify, etc licenses
  • Offline support
  • Use case is on-demand playback
In addition, here are the official new Flash Access features:

  • New client support with Flash Player
  • Flexible usage rules
  • Persistent content protection
  • Authenticated and anonymous access
  • Output protection
  • Performance optimization
  • Support for Software as a Service (SaaS)
